3-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone (HGB),also known as (S)-4-Hydroxytetrahydrofuran-2-one,is expected to be a useful C4 chiral synthon for the synthesis of chiral pharmaceuticals and neutraceuticals such as HIV inhibitors (Kim et al. 1995), synthetic statins (Müller 2005),and L-carnitine (Wang and Hollingsworth 1999b). (S)-3-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone (S-HGB) is a precursor to various enantiopure intermediates for chiral drugs such as holesterol-lowering drugs.
