Colorless or white rhombic crystalline powder. No odor, slightly bitter taste, after the sense of anesthesia. Change color in the light. Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in fat oil, soluble in dilute acid, ethanol, ether, chloroform, almond oil, olive oil.Used as a local anesthetic. Long – term effect, low toxicity. Benzocaine, sold under the brand name Orajel among others, is an ester local anesthetic commonly used as a topical pain reliever or in cough drops. It is also combined with antipyrine to form A/B otic drops to relieve ear pain and remove earwax.

Benzocaine is also used to numb the skin or surfaces inside the mouth, nose, throat, vagina, or rectum to lessen the pain of inserting a medical instrument such as a tube or speculum.
Benzocaine topical should not be used to treat teething pain in infants, and is not approved for use in a child younger than 2 years old. There are many brands and forms of benzocaine topical available. Not all brands are listed on this leaflet.|
