Colorless or white rhombic crystalline powder. No odor, slightly bitter taste, after the sense of anesthesia. Change color in the light. Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in fat oil, soluble in dilute acid, ethanol, ether, chloroform, almond oil, olive oil.Used as a local anesthetic. Long – term effect, low toxicity. Benzocaine, sold under the brand name Orajel among others, is an ester local anesthetic commonly used as a topical pain reliever or in cough drops.
